Injections
Injection Therapy
At JMC Physiocures we provide joint injections to help manage pain, inflammation and to support rehabilitation. These can be used to help with joint pain, arthritis or other conditions such as trigger finger or carpal tunnel. We provide both cortico-steroid injections and Ostenil injections.
What is Ostenil Plus?
Ostenil Plus is a solution containing hyaluronic acid developed specifically for the treatment of osteoarthritis. It can be injected into the knee, or any of the other synovial joints in the body to decrease pain and stiffness and improve the other symptoms of osteoarthritis.
It contains a higher concentration of sodium hyaluronate (hyaluronic acid) than standard Ostenil, plus mannitol, and offers the option to reduce the number of injections to one per treatment cycle. Ostenil Plus has overtaken Ostenil and almost all clinics now offer Ostenil Plus as a more cost-effective solution.
How does Ostenil Plus work?
This medication is injected into the space between the joint that contains synovial fluid and works to restore the balance between the breakdown and production of hyaluronic acid. This effect means Ostenil Plus can help decrease pain and stiffness of the joint.
The hyaluronic acid in Ostenil Plus is very pure and is manufactured using fermentation. Containing no animal proteins, it is unlikely to cause an allergic reaction, plus the addition of mannitol (a sugar derivative) helps the hyaluronic acid to work for longer and more efficiently in the joint.
What is the difference between steroid injections and ostenil injections?
Steroid injections are fast acting medications that can provide good short to medium term pain relief, allowing time to fully rehabilitate any injuries. Ostenil is a supplement rather than a medication and has a slower action of 2-4 weeks but can provide a longer lasting effect on arthritic joints.
What does it cost?
A cortico-steroid injection costs £170 including a physiotherapy consultation.
An Ostenil injection costs £210 including a physiotherapy consultation.
Are there any reasons why I cannot have an injection?
There are some medical reasons why a steroid injection may not be suitable for you. These would be discussed with the physiotherapist prior to any injection.
There are no contra-indicatons to having an Ostenil injection but you physiotherapist can discuss the pros and cons of injection therapy with you.
